Our class project will deal with questions that we have been thinking about since the beginning of the class.  How is the nature of the northern forest defined by its culture? How is the opposite true? What threats do the economy of the Northern Forest face, and where do we go from here, with what we know?  These questions, while they may not be answered, should be presented in an open forum to allow an individual to make his or her own stance on the ideas relating to the Northern Forest.

In class, we had many great ideas as to which methods we will pursue in our project.  While I am not necessarily on board with doing individual projects, I feel as though the project should include many parts.  Perhaps we could all work on different parts, while the project remains a cohesive, group effort.  In my eyes this project should include things like a “classroom” like discussion, various art pieces by the students of the class (paintings, poems, essays) and interactive games that engage youngsters in topics of discussion of the Northern Forest.   Specifically, I believe this could even be held over a few days, including a discussion event, and a display of the art we have worked on that represents the region.  We have been speaking about minimizing the distance between words and place, and I feel as though student – made art will represent not only the “landscape” or “nature”, but our individual interpretations of these metaphors as well.  This truly will minimize the distance between the two.

The role of representation is an intriguing one. Can artists help to re-present the NoFo region as a holistic tableau of loving embrace of place? Can we really change a place through representational art alone? Or can it be part of a larger solution? How can art be part of larger solution in collaboration with other aspects of a regional cultural identity?

I feel like individual projects are a great way to get things done but we have to look at our time frame for the remaining year. Topic choice takes a class. research and development takes a week or so. Then presentations take a week to make sure it is what the class wants to represent the NoFo as. Where are we after that sitting right next to thanksgiving with 2 to 3 weeks left in the semester. How much activism can we get done in 2 to 3 weeks, it takes a week to contact everyone to schedule things. Then there is even less time. I do like the individual project idea but I think it is too time consuming, for the amount of time we have left in the semester.
